Black Wall Art

Black artwork is the strongest structural tool in a room. It creates a fixed point the eye returns to, which is why interior designers use one dark piece to hold together a scheme full of soft neutrals. Get it right and everything else in the room looks more deliberate.

The pairing decisions are simple. Black art on a white or pale wall is pure contrast and needs nothing else. Black art on a dark wall is far more sophisticated but needs a white or white wood floating frame to define the edge, otherwise the canvas dissolves. Against wood, brass or leather, black keeps the palette from turning muddy.
